Shooting Par at the Lakewood Rotary Club Meeting
April 23, 2021 by Donn Irwin
A sure way to hit a par is to leave a four-foot birdie putt two inches from the hole.
Golf, a very short history:
First century Romans played a game similar to golf – it was called “paganica”.
Between the 8th and 14th centuries the Chinese played “chuiwan”. They used a club like stick to hit a small ball into a hole.
The modern game of golf originated in 15th century Scotland while the 18-hole game we have today began in 1764 and was created at St. Andrews, Scotland on the “Old Course”.
The first written record of golf in the west shows up in a document written by King James II in 1457 banning the game because it was a distraction to learning archery. (As well as many other things I would imagine).
In 1502 Jimmy the second’s wiser descendant, James IV, lifted that crazy ban…. mainly because he became a golfer himself.
The oldest golf tournament in the world is the “Open Championship”, better known to us as the British Open.
Above: A golf course you will hear about below, bedecked in fall colors
Pre game chatter:
There was a ton of stuff chatted about before the meeting began.
Below is a cryptic sampling of the important cultural musing of the collective minds gathered together via Zoom before our meeting begins.
Discussion of various whiskeys and their potencies.
Is Rediske really Mark Edgecomb’s cousin? The rumor persists.
Traveling during hurricane season…why??!!!
Just a few looooonng weeks left of the current Presidency.
Canada’s woes concerning Covid (really bad).
Waking up Gary Barton……well, his computer anyway.
Mary “The Fish” Marlin and fields of flowers. (Tulips that is)
Above: Tulips like these were discussed
President Mark getting thrown out of a pub (in his younger days…I think?).
John Lowney and his wrestling days.
Pub crawls…...in Mt. Vernon of all places!
Charlene Miseli announced that there is no covid in Texas.
Jan Gee commented on last week’s meeting…...I believe she said it was boring but she put it in a nice way. (Actually, she was just having some fun).
This might be Charlene M’s last meeting with us.
Somehow there was talk about vampires, of all things. This writer has no idea how that happened but it did – check the tape.
Charlene M coined a new slogan for us “Pay to Pray” as she paid a fine for her daughter’s accepting her appointment at West Point.
Our leader, Mark Edgecomb began the meeting at, gasp! 12:32PM.
Charlene Miseli gave the invocation and President Mark led us in the Pledge.
Making our meeting happen:
Meeting set?up: Leanna Christian.
For fines/foundation/etc: John Lowney
Bulletin writer: Donn Irwin
Bulletin photographer: Each and every Rotarian in the meeting!
Visiting Rotarians – District Governor, our very own Greg Horn
Guests: James Osundwa and eminent new member Steve Saalfeld.
Puffins Present: The guy with two first names: Tom George. Carl Bronkema and Rachel Mazoff too.
There was no sunshine (and no Forkenbrock) but the Pres said all is well with his family.
None of us in the club had a birthday on this particular day but over the years there have been a few people of note born on this day. Some writer dude back in the 1500’s that went by the name Billy Shakespeare, a little silver screen star back in the “ago” named Shirley Temple and a modern-day comedian of Latino descent – George Lopez.
Bill “I’m a lucky guy” Potter and his lovely bride, Sue, celebrated their anniversary on this day. Bill generously anted up $100.00 for his anniversary and other family blessings.
NOTE: Lakewood Rotary turns 65 on Sunday the 25th. Our District Governor and esteemed fellow Rotarian, Greg Horn, showed off his math skills by informing all of us that, in 35 years we will be 100. No wonder he was made DG!
The actual distance a bad golfer is going to hit the ball with any club obviously depends on many factors, not the least of which is whether the ball was actually hit at all.
The Honorable Mr. Horn also introduced and inducted new member, Steve Saalfeld to us.
Steve was asked to say a few words to us. He agreed but first had to let the dog in as it was scratching at the door. (Yet another amazing example of the effectiveness of Zoom – we get to share in the everyday occurrences of other people’s lives).
With the dog being taken care of, Steve went on to share “a few “words about himself. This writer didn’t get everything but managed to capture the gist of what Steve had to share: Oregon born. Raised on a farm. One of eight kids from a Catholic family. Bucked hay, moved irrigation pipes, watched cows being butchered – you know, the usual farm stuff. Steve loved the farm but not the farming. Attended the University of Puget Sound (Go Loggers), met his wife, played some football. Steve’s wife, Jennifer, works at Dwyer, Pemberton and Coulson. They have 4 kids, including twins. Our newest Puffin has worked for the Loggers and Charles Wright but decided to try the corporate world. He soon discovered he didn’t much like the corporate thing and decided to get back into nonprofit work. Steve has been at MultiCare since 2018 and is now in Donor Relations at The Mary Bridge Children’s Foundation.
The statute of limitations on forgotten strokes is two holes.
The Olio (Announcements and other necessary stuff)
Greg R gave a shout out to Tonya Winski for helping get our new member, Steve, into the club.
Eric Quinn hyped the upcoming FUNdraising night on Saturday. Joe Quinn hyped the matching funds for the FUNdraising event.

the virtual convention is now open. Early registration is only $49 through May 7, 2021 and after is $65.
Fines: President Mark thanked PP Joe Quinn for stepping in for him last week. The Pres then proceeded to pay fines for the trip he took and Lakewood Rotary’s anniversary. The anniversary fine was $65.00 and that was matched by Jan Gee, the Greg brothers – Rediske and Horn as well as john Lowney, Carol Wier and Barb Spriggs. (That was all that this writer heard anyway so please accept my apologies if I missed your name).
President Mark called out the Mighty Joe Quinn to harass him about a trip to Florida and his weightlifting prowess. Seems as though Mighty Joe has once again out muscled fellow lifters and walked away with national gold medals. Joe paid a fine equal to half of the 65th year anniversary fines paid by the above. Hopefully our CPA President can figure out the fine. (That would be $32.50. Eric, do you know if that is real gold and are you in line to inherit?)

The Program: The Lifeblood of the Tacoma Country & Golf Club…. Our Committees.
Anne Enquist introduced our guest speaker, Barb Dalton: Barb and her husband are from Indiana (fellow Hoosiers!) and came here in 1974. Barb has her own Interior Design firm (1983). She and her husband, Bart, joined Tacoma Country & Golf Club (TCGC) in 1995. She has been involved with various committees since then, including the House & Grounds Committee. Barb has served on the board and held all of the Executive Board positions including her current position as President. NOTE: She is the first female President of the Board of the Tacoma Country & Golf Club.
Point of order: It is tough to use the title President when you are writing about two different ones but I figured it out – President Barb will be called Madam President for the purpose of writing up her presentation so that the readers know “who’s on first”. Madam President (MP) opened up her remarks with a thank you and explanation of what she wanted to present to us. She announced that the club has a new General Manager and a new Golf Pro.
Then it was onto the real work of the club – the work done at the Committee level.
Committee action summaries:
The Vision Statement and the Mission Statement are both being fine-tuned.
Greens Committee – completed the Oaks Preservation Project
Irrigation Committee – miles of pipe being replaced. Landscape Unlimited is working on the project.
Above: The Tacoma Country & Golf Club Hole #4
Golf Committee – working with the head pro to shape the summer schedule.
House and Grounds Committee – preparing a master plan for the club
Membership – membership is strong and there is a waiting list.
Legacy – Focusing on the history of the club. Historic clock installed, commemorative flags near the clubhouse and Legacy Plaza.
Social Committee – Putting together another Putt Putt Wine & Nine evening. This event is for both full and social members.
Junior Committee – focuses on programs for younger folks to help them learn the game of golf. The committee is hoping for swimming and tennis programs depending on covid sanctions.
Technology Committee – Working on improving security on the grounds and updating the website and social media presence.
Finance Committee – (or as Pres Mark would say – the most important committee) are working on assets and replacement needs.
Madam President, Barb, wrapped up her presentation with a thank you and entertained several questions from the LR Zoom audience.
NOTE: The meeting adjourned at 1:36PM…. but who keeps track of such things?
