Technology is Great, Until It Isn’t
My zoom was being completely uncooperative which made being the bulletin writer very interesting. Was it just me?! Oh the joys of technology (or maybe it’s just my old computer that I can’t seem to part with!)
Mark opened our meeting at just around 12:31.
Our Invocation was given by Bob Hammar with a reminder of Service above Self and the Rotary way.
Mark led us in the Flag Salute.
Huge thanks to Leanna Christian for ensuring that our meetings are always running smoothly.
John Lowney has his pen at the ready to write down all of our generous contributions.
Greg Horn, our very own District Governor, joined our meeting – and he was so excited to be with us!
Guests – while there were lots of familiar and unfamiliar guests sharing our screen space, most were part of the presentation planned for later. Jim Rooks did have a guest visitor who was checking us out as a potential member.
Puffins joining the meeting included me, Tom George, Mike Murtha (all of the way from Maine!), and Carol Wier. Secretary Greg Rediske announced that we have added about 12 new members this Rotary year so far!
Above: Don’t you just love Puffins?
There was no Sunshine to share.
No Birthdays or Anniversaries on this date either. Mark also noticed that we only have two wedding anniversaries in the month of May – if this is incorrect, please reach out!
Greg Horn and Chris Kimball celebrated May Anniversaries (club and marriage). Chris asked those celebrating a marriage anniversary to share the most awkward thing to happen on a first/second date. Bob Hammar had me giggling when he let us know that on a second date, his date’s father took him to the cemetery and introduced him to all the deceased relatives. I certainly have an idea now for when I meet my children’s future spouse!
Mark led us in the Induction of our newest member, Wendy McGowan! See below too. Wendy is the widow of long-time member Mike McGowan and spent 37 years in communications after being immersed in it from an early age, watching her father and mother work for the newspaper. She shared that she and Mike met at college (MSU) and had a long-distance relationship early in their courting while Mike was serving his country. At the age of 24, Wendy was hired to help with advertising at a local grocery store where Mike was the Assistant Manager – and at one point was the only woman in a meeting of men. (Actually, Wendy was quite a pioneer as a successful businesswoman.) From there, advertising became a passion for her and grew into a solid career. Wendy and Mike mentored many young people, watching them grow into esteemed professionals. It was a cornerstone of their relationship.

Steve Enquist gave an update on the annual Rotarian and non-Rotarian awards. Nominations are due by May 20th! Currently, there are several Rotarian of the Year nominations but more nominations are needed for the non-Rotarian award. As a reminder, the non-Rotarian award should go to someone in the Lakewood community who best exemplifies the principles of Rotary-- Service Above Self--but is not a member of Rotary.

Late Breaking News from Auction/Fundraising Committee:
Hey Rotarians, Nicole Hancock and Eric Quinn want your Teams to get together and think up all of the fun experiences you want to see up for bid at the Auction. Physical "stuff" will also be accepted, but we would far prefer that your Teams think up some fun experiences/adventures that Rotarians and non-Rotarians would bid on. All Rotarians (and non-Rotarians) can locate a procurement form here: https://www.dacdb.com/Accounts/5020/Downloads/69/Procurement%20Form%20-%202021%20(fillable).pdf
Eric has also posed this challenge to the Team captains: The captain of the team that raises the most cash between now and May 21 (this coming Friday) will get a free ticket ($50) to the Sip by Sip pre-event. A description of the Sip by Sip event is included above in this bull.
For those of you who are less "tech savvy" about registering for the auction, check out this "how to" guide from the Maxgiving website: https://maxgiving.kayako.com/article/345-the-how-to-guide-for-using-maxgiving
If you are not going to be able to procure an experience or item this year, we understand. Instead, you should consider donating here: https://lakewoodrotary.maxgiving.bid/donations
If you or someone you know may be interested in sponsoring the auction rather than procuring an experience or item, email Eric or Nicole with questions about sponsorship.
Remember that if you shop online, you should do so at Amazon Smile so you can allocate a portion of your purchase to Lakewood Rotary. Also remember to tell Greg Rediske that you read the bulletin so you can get a make-up for a missed meeting.
