MEETING RECAP
Saturday, May 21, 2022
By: John W. MagnusonWhere were you?
The Lakewood Key
Where were you on Sunday May 18, 1980?
Our family was in Richland attending a professional association meeting. It was the final day and a grand breakfast buffet was planned. A friend and I decided to go for a run along the Columbia River. We no sooner left the parking lot, when the sun was blotted out by dark grey upside-down clouds. “Certainly, this is the apocalypse,” said my Roman Catholic friend who knows about such things. Not that we Methodists don’t know, but we – Methodists – don’t believe for one minute apocalyptic events begin in eastern Washington; California, more likely and Hollywood for sure!
Normally decisive people turned befuddled. Parents began asking their pre-teen kids for advice. Belgian waffles with strawberries and whipped cream sat soppily, untouched at the buffet. Many families decided to go back to Seattle over Snoqualmie Pass. Unfortunately for them their motors clogged with ash from the Mt. St. Helens eruption and they all convened in Vantage. A knot of us looked at a saner but slower route south over the Umatilla Bridge into Oregon and Highway 84 toward Portland.
So, what does this have to do with the Lakewood Rotary Club meeting on Friday May 20, 2022? Would the meeting turn into a bellwether day as that day 42 years ago did? Said meeting got off to a grand start with all the bell ringing, invocation, Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. All the usual super suspects participated in the tasks associated with making the meeting happen. This epistle and the associated photos are by the same folks who bring the bulletin to you from time to time. I could name all the Rotarians who make President Jim look good for you, or trust that you know who they are?

An impressive group whom you should really get to know are the Puffins: Rachel Mazoff, Steve Saalfeld, Jamie Simons, James Oswunda, Wendy McGowan, Connie Coleman-Lacadie, Anthony Veliz, Bob Martin, Andy Phillips, Angela Connelly, Dwight Williams, Linda McDermott, Veronica Bronkema and Hank Kerns. Puffins, if you were there, please raise your hands as (if) you read this.
President Jim had the distinct honor of introducing our newest member, Assistant Governor Tony Camoroda. Tony gracefully thanked President Jim then accepted the Puffin from Hank Kerns.

We took some time to memorialize wonderful Past President Mary Lou Sclair. PP Gayle Selden eulogized our diminutive Leprechaun and her “I’ve got a secret” grin. The wife of PDG Dave Sclair and mother of PP Ben Sclair, Mary Lou wanted a place where her grand kids could go for a swing in a park. That kernel of an idea became the Playground at Fort Steilacoom. Ahh me; passages. She was a lovely person.

Along the lines of Sunshine, Eric Warn remarked on Carole Wier’s struggles of late. Rose Stevens reported that Bob Zawilski is hospitalized at the moment. Keep our Rotarian friends in your thoughts and prayers. Eric Quinn reported on the upcoming year of our exchange student Hans Bruun of Denmark. He will be staying with Mike and Paula Murtha. The last time we had an exchange student from Denmark it was a memorable stay with wonderful Victor. Now Victor has a lovely sailboat and an even lovelier Anna. That’s all you’re getting on that nugget.
Angela Connelly touted her new book and praised Kathryn Hedrick, a contributor. The book is about non-profit organizations. President Jim announced Peter Marsh’s heirloom tomato starts would be available beginning next week. Check Your Farmer’s Almanac to see on which day of the Lunar Calendar to plant them. PJ reminded all to bring food for the Little Pantries next week. Veronica Bronkema is doing some preliminary work on the establishment of a Rotaract Club. Rotaract is a great opportunity for building leadership and mentorship skills as well as farming future Rotarians.

Check with the www.lakewoodrotary.com website for dates and times about the Installation Luau for incoming President Jason Whalen. Information is also available about the Floating Board meeting picnic and the Reeder Roadster Romp. Speaking of Jason, he ventured to Victoria BC to the DC. PE JW reported that PJ wasn’t at the DC.

Steve Enquist awarded Bill and Pat Price the highest Paul Harris level of Foundation giving – 3 Rubies. Congratulations to Bill and Pat. Pat also announced that they are selling their real estate company founded by her parents in 1960. PP Chris Kimball made the Looooonnngggg awaited announcement that the Pantera is back. He then claimed that it has more horsepower than my vehicle. I now boast an electric assist bicycle that may just eclipse his claim!
Court Commissioner Clint Johnson showed a brief video of a car driven into the barge owned by Johnsons, Whalens and Mazoffs. Having been a former part owner of said barge, I enquired as to how much the collision damages improved said barge. Strange, I didn’t hear the answer, and all 3 of them are lawyers! Then PP John Lowney announced that said barge had also recently been improved in condition by flipping while on the trailer being towed. The place that “improved Kimball’s Pantera” has some open space for repairs, if any are necessary. That space is available for the next 7 years, by the way.
The Auction is now open for business!
And Sally Porter Smith says get busy bidding!

Bud Montgomery submitted a beautiful handcrafted wooden bowl and PP Joe Quinn entered as auctioneer. Dave Swindale stole it for $65 at a live auction right during the meeting!

Past Governor Greg Horn proceeded to tell us all how simple and easy and elementary it is to put the Dacdb.com doodad on your cell phone. He began by asking how many of us had a phone when we were in our cells, or something like that. But it’s really quite easy: log on to lakewoodrotary.com. Type dacdb.com into the inquiry space. Go to the App Store and search for dacdb.com. When you find that, take the 594 Sound Transit bus from Lakewood Towne Center to SeaTac International Airport. When you get to the airport, create a 12 digit alpha numeric Saanskrit polyglot password and exchange it for return fare on the 594 bus returning to Lakewood Towne Center. Memorize the driver’s name and… and….well, you know how simple this all is. Give it a go!
The patron in the bar asked the bartender, “What’s the wifi password?” Bartender replied, “You have to buy a drink first.” “Hmmm, okay, I’ll have a Coke.” Ordered the customer. Bartender asked, “Pepsi okay?”
