Get Ready to GROAN!
by Wendy McGowan
THE LAKEWOOD KEY
The Gong is Gone! In its place, an enormous conch shell, makes me sit up and take notice that Jason Whalen (bedecked in his flowered garb) is now at the helm.
He welcomed us all and invited Clint Johnson to give the invocation. Jason then asked Don Daniels to lead the Pledge of Allegiance.
President Whalen recognized the Set-Up Crew, who each worked to make this meeting happen, and this week consisted of Rob Erb, Bob Martin, Rick Selden and Kendra Riconosciuto. Gayle Selden hosted the Zoomers.
Recorder of fines, our astute treasurer John Lowney, was acknowledged on Zoom. Treasurer Lowney asked, “Why is money called dough?” Answering his own question, he stated, “Because you knead it!” GROAN!!!
Jan Gee filled in for Sergeant at arms and did double duty at the $2 Table. The Foundation Desk was manned by Chuck Hellar. Walt Richardson, our photographer-of-the-day, queried: “How does a photographer get his subjects to smile?” Simply, “He asks them to ‘say cheese.’” GROAN!!!!!
A long list of visiting Rotarians and guests of Rotarians ensued: Becky from Clover Park Rotary, Judy H., Jim U., realtor Yorleny Clapper, and Dick Muri (today’s speaker). Pat Price once again was a guest, helping her husband and member Bill Price and also introducing Harry Cartwright--Bill Price’s 94- year-old uncle. Last-but-not-least Kendra Riconosciuto’s children, Amelia and Sawyer. I apologize for my lack of names and details. For sure, I will not sit in front of the “loud” speaker again.
(Suggestion: All Visiting Rotarians should sign in and the bulletin writer should be provided with the list. As for Guests, maybe those introducing guests could provide a slip of paper to the bull writer, with the name fully spelled. That might help. Or not. The Editor.)
Christian Tomlinson was also recognized as the newly-elected Rotaract chairman.
Announcements were next on the agenda. Rick Selden reminded us that the Floating Board Meeting is this coming Thursday at Holly Hedge. The cost is $20.00. Steaks butchered by John Lowney, yummy side dishes, plenty of wine and boat cruises around Lake Steilacoom will be enjoyed by all. Starts at 4:00 p.m. with dinner served at 6:00 p.m. (or so).
Greg Horn encouraged us to attend a surprise presentation to the family that Mary Horn and Rose Stevens have been helping for the last three years. It is (was) being held at Center Collision at 1111 Center Street in Tacoma on Saturday, July 16th. Mary and Rose entered the family, whose car died-- leaving them with no transportation, in a contest to win a free vehicle. Mary sent out an email earlier this week saying that the family is one of the three finalists. It seems that the owners of Center Collision, Kevin and Debbie House, give away a car every year.
Susan Warner, of Lakewold Gardens, alerted us that Lakewold’s Annual Summer Party is going to be on Sunday, July 24. The details and an entry form were on each table today. Dance instructors will be demonstrating during the event and guests will enjoy dancing into the evening.

Fines and Generous Giving followed the many announcements. I didn’t capture all of them, but here is a sample: Don Anderson gave his grandkids a boat and for that he offered $100. Don also donated another $100 now that he is a “past Mayor”. Next, Greg Horn offered $50 for his 1/2-year birthday. Not to be outdone, Past-president, Jim Rooks gave up a twenty dollar bill just for standing up and talking. Another PP, Mark Edgecomb, added another $20 to the pot now that the kids are out of the house. And, Don Daniels offered $50 for a trip to San Diego and a wedding anniversary and an additional $50 to the Paul Harris Foundation.
Above; Dick Muri groaning
Greg Horn held the honor of introducing our speaker, Dick Muri, Mayor of Steilacoom. Muri’s resume is lengthy and impressive. Most of his time on the podium was dedicated to his knowledge of electric/battery-operated cars. He proposed the 12 most-frequently asked questions about such vehicles and answered each in detail. Here are a couple that intrigued me:
Why should we convert from fossil fuel vehicles to electric vehicles? Dick’s answer: It’s not about Climate Change. It’s about fossil fuels being rapidly consumed. It is important for the United States to remain energy independent. We already import oil at a cost of $7 million each day.
Don’t these vehicle batteries often catch fire and cannot be put out? The truth is, according to Mr. Muri, more than 800 United States citizens die from fires in gasoline-operated cars every year. Zero United States citizens die from battery-operated cars in a year.
There were several other positive reasons that Dick gave for buying an all-electric automobile: They are very safe, built much heavier, have a very low maintenance cost and they are never stolen! So many questions ensued from the audience that Mr. Muri had but five minutes to talk about “the-state-of-the-town” of Steilacoom.
Following Dick Muri, the weekly drawing was held. There were two winners this week: Barb Spriggs drew a $5 chip (AGAIN) and Greg Rediske was the winner to be a guest at the July 24th Lakewold Summer Party.

“Why did the bulletin writer use so much graph paper, instead of the usual ruled paper?” Answering immediately, she said, “Because she was always plotting something.” GROAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
