THE LAKEWOOD KEY
Jason blew on the conch shell and called for a hearty “Aloha” on Friday, August 19, 2022. Eric Warn did a very good impromptu job on the Invocation and someone led us in the Pledge but the inexperienced scribe missed it, because President Jason Whalen (PJW) called on him unexpectedly to lead us in the beautiful singing of O Canada. District Governor Dale Roberts diplomatically hid behind his napkin so we could not see him laughing heartily at us butchering his national anthem! (Actually, I made that up, as I was too busy singing off key to watch Dale at the same time.)
PJW deftly recognized all his helpers on this day, including setup crew James Osundwa, Kendra Riconosciuto, Rick Selden and maybe someone else I missed. Mark Edgecomb was helping at the entry table along with Jan Gee. Walt Richardson took all the fun photos in this bulletin and the Editor of the Lakewood Key decided to write for a change to remind himself that his expectations of the scribes is unrealistic. It really is not easy to keep up.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests were recognized and included the DG Team that featured PDG Mo Fritz-Roberts and her husband, the current DG Dale Roberts of Comox Valley. Also, he introduced again our Exchange Student Hans (pronounced like “hands”) Bruun of Denmark and Jerry, the Operations Manager at Christian Tomlinson’s company. “Another potential member,” Jason asked.

The Health and Wellness report by Eric Warn? Eric said all was fine but asked Rick Selden to offer up something. Rick said that Gayle Selden picked up the Covid virus while traveling so cannot be with us today.
Induction of New Member:
PJW called forward Yorleny Clapper for induction into membership in the Rotary Club of Lakewood. Yorleny, originally of Costa Rica, has lived in the U.S. for 18 years now. She and her husband, Patrick, landed first in Austin, Texas and now here in the Pacific Northwest. She professed to like our green vegetation more than the dry hills and plains of Texas. They have a daughter named Amanda. Yorleny works in marketing but has been a teacher and a real estate agent. I think she said she has a B.A. in political science. She looks forward to being a LR Rotarian for many years.
Next, PJW called on Steve Enquist and the DG Dale Roberts to help him honor Troy Wilcox for his third Paul Harris award.
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Barb Spriggs spoke briefly about the Kayak event that was an Auction item for many folks. It will start at 9:00 a.m. Sunday on American Lake Park, Be there for the safety briefing at 9 o’clock sharp, Barb said.
Christian Tomlinson said the first Rotaract meeting is taking place at the Ram in Lakewood tonight from 6 to 7:30 p.m. (Friday, so if you missed it, …it was fun even without you!) . We can report that it appeared as though a half dozen potential Rotaracters met to discuss the new club and several LR Rotarians were there to assist Christian with the organizational meeting and the beer drinking.
Joe Quinn is heading up the good times on the golf course on September 1 at Oakbrook, with several tee times, and a contribution of $40 per person for food. You do not need to play golf to join us at the Adriatic Grill for a fine meal at about 5:30 p.m. 18-hole players start between about 12:30 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. and the 9-holers start about 3:30 p.m. Most of those eating have paid but if you have not, send Joe a check or pay at Rotary. We will have at least 22 folks dining and at least 18 golfers too. Great prizes. 18-holers should tell Joe if you have a handicap or want to compete as a “Callaway” for those prizes.
Phil Eng noted that the Courage is this weekend and our member, Steve Saalfeld, may still be leading the fundraising charge. The Engs, the Seldens, and the Swindales are staffing not one, but two, rest stops this year. Service above self personified.
Fines: Jason fined himself $10 and the Editor $5 for running that hilarious photo of the Mermaid Whale(n) on a Hawaiian beach in last week’s bulletin. This job sure is fun sometimes. Jan Gee paid a fine for something but we missed it while laughing. Christian paid off his IOU of $80 from a few weeks ago, which had something to do with Rotaract. Someone claimed Jason should pay a fine for mentoring Christian so well, but Jason said those two huge drinks he bought for Christian in his lobbying effort should suffice. Tony Camoroda paid $20 for doing two introductions: Mo and Dale. Pat Price paid $60 for the 60th anniversary of her and Bill Price. Bill Potter, the incoming Assistant Governor for our area clubs, paid a $20 fine and bragged about his daughter and college achievement. He thanked Rotary for approving the $6000 contribution for the new swing set in the park. He also wanted us to save the date of October 22nd for Make a Difference Day. More on that soon. Bill Allen paid $200 for being a grandpa soon. Carole Wier, who is staying with the Northcutts on Lake Steilacoom offered up $100 for her wonderful visit with us from her new home in Minnesota. Land of 1,000 Lakes, and freezing winters. (Sorry, Carole, had to remind you of that!)
THE PROGRAM:
Above: DG Terry Dale Roberts of Comox Valley Rotary
Tony Camoroda, the current AG and new member of our club, introduced DG Dale Roberts, but not until he honored PDG Greg Horn, and in absentia PDG Gordy Quick. He also made all Past Presidents of Lakewood Rotary stand up and there were a surprising number of them who were there and who could still stand up.
Dale has been a Rotarian since 1977. He joined the Comox club in 1992 and is now in the club at Comox Valley. His wife, Mo, manages their business. They have three children. Both Dale and Mo are Major Donors to RI. Neither Dale nor Tony explained why they call him “Batman”. During his talk, Dale was backed strongly by a cutout of Jennifer Jones, the current (and first female) President of Rotary International. He mentioned that Rotary now has many strong leaders who happen to be female, not the least of whom is his own wife, PDG Mo Fritz-Roberts. Mo was the District Governor one year before the reign of Greg Horn.
Dale’s DG talk was not at all boring. He did tell one joke and it was about DG visits. He said maybe Gordy Quick told him this true story about when he was DG and visited a small club on Vancouver Island while doing his DG duties. The DG stopped at a local establishment to ask for directions and was told it was easy to find, as it was just down the road a piece. But the local man added, “Don’t expect a huge crowd today, as the District Governor is coming to speak.”
Dale made three big points. Number One: it is all about membership! He said this should be easy because: “Isn’t Rotary great?” He stressed all the wonderful things RI is doing in the world, such as striving mightily to eradicate polio from the earth. Number Two: How about the Foundation? This is RI’s international arm. Is it not the greatest and most productive charitable organization in the world? In passing, he mentioned Every Rotarian Every Year and the other ideas to spur giving such as Rotary Direct. (Did you know that we only have 9 LR Rotarians so far using this automatic, easy-to-use online giving method? Try it; it is most convenient.) Number Three: District Conference. Now combined with the District Assembly –which focuses more on training—the District conference has inspiring motivational speakers and is often held, as in 2022 and 2023, in the beautiful, historic city of Victoria, British Columbia. What’s not to like? Next year’s keynote speaker is Jordan Peterson, a well-known writer and influencer.
Dale ended with a quote: “You don’t just belong to Rotary, Rotary belongs to you.”
DRAWING: After the meeting ended, Rick Selden won the raffle again, but this time only $5.
