By: John W. MagnusonA Terrible Parable
Regarding The Four-Way Test
The Lakewood Key
Did you ever make the mistake of writing a letter of complaint to a business before your temper has cooled down? Boy, I have. In your heart and your brain you know you need to be polite and reasonable in order to get results – read that as convincing a total stranger to see things your way. Then have you ever had to write - oh, say – The Rotary Club of Lakewood Bulletin while you are still in a foul frame of mind? Boy, I have. Two things at play here: 1. Settle down, take a breath, go to your calming place and be patient and polite to the person in the complaint department before you give them “the business.” Then: 2. When it comes to writing the Lakewood Rotary Bulletin be just as nice as can be. Fellow Rotarians don’t identify with your problem at the business in question. Write with a smile on that pretty face of yours!
Now that I have that off my chest, I’d like to warn you to never do business with those nimrods at the Acme Wingnut Company! What a bunch of doofusses! Get your wingnuts from Tacoma Wingnut Supply or Wingnuts R Us. Those dimbulbs at Acme Wingn…. Oh, wait. I wasn’t going to do that. I need to calm down, take a breath, go to my happy place and forget about the unfortunate misunderstanding I recently experienced when purchasing wingnuts. Think of The Rotary Four Way Test: In the things we think, say and do; Is it the Truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? And, how can you make certain those horse’s patooties at Acme Wingnut Company burn in hellfire and damnation for eternity? Oh wait, that’s the five-way test; just use the first four questions. Framing everyday transactions and relationships with those ethical canons is easy and effective.
Easier to begin than it is to stop
Breathing now; calming now; thinking of a Maui sunset now; counting ten…. And now; President Jason blue, blowed, blew the conch shell. What a great gathering of eager Rotarians. Nothing compares with Lakewood Rotary. For example, take this quiz: 1. Who gave the inspiring invocation on Friday?[1] 2. Who led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag?[2] 3. Who did President Jason thank for setting-up the meeting?[3] 4. Who was the photographer and who was/is the reporter?[4] 5. What did you have for lunch at TCGC?[5] See what I mean? You ain’t gonna get that anywhere but Lakewood Rotary, and you can get it every Friday!
Acknowledging Puffins, guests, visitors, the infirm and VIP’s
Our Danish exchange student was introduced - Hans Bruun. James Osundwa introduced his wife and daughter – a brand new Rotaract member! PDG Greg Horn introduced Brook Fisher Clark of Longview Rotary, today’s speaker. Eric Warn welcomed the return of PP Gayle Selden, recently recovered from COVID. After hailing ZOOMIES President Whalen recognized Chuck Hellar on ZOOM in a hospital bed with Cellulitis. Chuck promised a return by next week. Get healthy Chuckals! (From now on, I’m just going to type PMJW for President Mayor Jason Whalen. It will save time and money because our Bulletin Editor –in-Chief won’t have to pay me for using 4 words – just one.)
Announcing Events, Fellowship, gatherings, feats of derring-do
Above: Potter telling us where to go
Bill Potter told of an upcoming work party at someplace (South Sound Wildlife Area?) on October 1 from 9:00 to 1:00. The work will be grounds cleanup, cement pouring and squat tag. Check with Google Maps to find Someplace, or tune in next week for further instructions. We were then schooled on the use of Smile.Amazon.Com for all shopping needs. It is a simple process – even those of Norwegian descent can learn how. Simply use your HTMLPDFRAMMMCCPU button. Or call me for instructions. Anne Enquist announced the program for September 30. Author and Rotarian Amanda Dubois will speak about her new book, The Complication, a page-turner.
Fines, Aloha Bucks
Greg Rediske told of Ole’s seventy-twelfth birthday; 48 years being married to Bonnie and upcoming marriage of youngest son Kyle; all for $100. Thanks Greg; you are not as bad a guy as they say you are! Veronica Bronkema gave $20 for a missing Puffin. PP Scott Buser has been on the road again to Chelan and Denver - $100. Eric Quinn gave $40 for birthdays of his kids.
What is the second largest city in Denmark?[6]
Above: Our Viking Explorer experiencing the New World!
Hans Bruun, Rotary exchange student, will attend Lakes High School. He already graduated from school in Denmark and celebrated with chums all dressed as Top Gun pilots. He is meeting students and neighbors of the Murtha’s; his host family. He describes himself as very active with interests in dirt-bike riding, skiing, hiking and soccer. He hopes to attend a Seahawks game while here. He showed photos of his home and family. His point of contact for activities and invitation is Paula Murtha.
PMJW asked what two things are Dolly Parton best known for?[7]
Above: Our enthusiastic speaker, Brook Fisher Clark
Mary Horn introduced our speaker Brook Fisher Clark, Longview Rotarian and United Way Executive. Brook gave a rapid-fire description of this early education program for child literacy. Dolly Parton Imagination Library was begun by Dolly in honor of her father. She called her father the smartest man she ever knew in spite of the fact he wasn’t able to attend school, as we know it. Dolly was one of 13 children living in a two-room ramshackle house, but she states that her Dad made certain the kids lacked for nothing. Her Imagination Library has given away more than 187 million free books to children from birth to five years of age.
Brook’s passion is to see this program grow throughout Washington State. There are 39 counties in Washington and Brook has programs in all but 8. She is not resting until all counties have access to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library. It takes
501-c-3 charities or public agencies to sponsor. The books cost $2.10 each. She has matching fund support so at this point the books are half price - $1.05. Brook has enlisted 32 affiliates as sponsors in Washington so far.
You might want to clear your 2023 calendar because Dolly Parton will be here. In Washington. State, that is. Impression: Brook is hyper-motivated, goal oriented, dynamic, sincere and able to leap tall buildings in a single bound. I mentioned a rapid-fire presentation. It was all of that and more. Looking at my notes there was also mention of WIC, SNAP, FCYF, Spokane and Orcas Island. Which makes perfect sense. There were a few questions but she covered the subject thoroughly. Another sterling program by Lakewood Rotary.
PMJW noted that he was always impressed by two things Dolly Parton was famous for. (Pause for effect.)[8] Settle down folks; he is now adding philanthropy through the Imagination Library to his short list.
The drawing was held. Secretly. (Don Anderson won $5.)
